Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the demographic, personal and psychological, family related and socio-cultural factors that help to predict mid-aged male and female adults¡¯ suicidal ideation. Moreover, this study examined how the factors that predict suicidal ideation are different depending on gender. The Korea Welfare Panel Study¡¯s data for the 6th year (2011) was used for the sample and the SPSSWIN 21.0 program was utilized for the data analysis. In order to identify whether there is a difference between gender when it comes to the factors that affect mid-aged adults¡¯ suicidal ideation, men and women were distinguished to conduct a binomial logistic regression analysis. The results of this study are as follows. First, mid-aged women tended to have a higher possibility of suicidal ideation when they had no spouse, were more depressed, had lower self-respect and tended to deal negatively with family conflict. Second, mid-aged men tended to have suicidal ideation more when their income was lower, and were more depressed.
